Helen Keller, author, activist, and the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Helen was the first deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. The story of how Keller’s teacher, broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language. Allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate. It has become widely known through the dramatic depictions of the play and film The Miracle Worker.

Keller was a tremendous presence in advocating for people with disabilities, women’s suffrage, and reproductive rights. In 1980, on the occasion of Keller’s 100th, birthday, former president Jimmy Carter designated June 27 as Helen Keller Day in Pennsylvania.
