30th June: Asteroid Day 2015

Asteroid Day is a global awareness movement where people from around the world come together to learn about asteroids and what we can do to protect our planet, our families, communities, and future generations. Asteroid Day will be held on the anniversary of the 1908 Siberian Tunguska event, the largest asteroid impact on Earth in recent history.

Asteroid Day was officially launched on December 3, 2014.

Also celebrated on this day:

  • Asteroid Day – June 30
  • Leap Second Time Adjustment Day – June 30
  • Meteor Day – June 30 [Imagine a baseball speeding along at 30,000 miles per hour with thousands of particles trailing along behind it…and it’s traveling right towards you! Meteor Day is celebrated every year on June 30th. Our research team found that a meteor impacted Tunguska, Siberia on June 30, 1908 around 7:14AM (the likely origin of Meteor Day). And according to a favorite movie of ours (Armageddon), “It happened before. It WILL happen again.” (Is this really something we should be celebrating?)]
  • National Ice Cream Soda Day  – June 30
